Poet's Place

My People
Clayton Powell

My people wear du-rags
And wave caps
My people think black
My people let their pants sag
My people want to have
More than their parents had

My people don’t commit crimes
My people write rhymes
My people paint revolution
In bright colors
On blank canvases
My people don’t shoot hollow tips
At kids
My people shoot tips
At hollow kids

My people find strength in pain
My people find faith
In neighborhoods of sorrow
My people would die today
If it meant their children
Could see tomorrow

My people are the answer
To the question:
What is pride?
My people redefine
Light

My people are You and I

Clayton Powell, a self-described “urban poet”, is a Petty Officer in the United States Navy. His work has been accepted in such underground publications as the Native Tongue Newsletter and Soul Fountain and will appear in the April 2001 issue of Left Curve. He has also has authored one chapbook, entitled “Dead On Arrival”. He hopes his writing will help to create an artistic revolution in African American communities in the coming years in which  brothers and sisters will use their raw talent to escape the shackles of everyday life.

Article: Possibilities
Angela Chapital

Reading and writing are two things that I love.  I want to do well in the writing field so I decided to pursue an English degree from George Mason University.  With this degree, I can be the editor of a magazine, a reporter writing those hard news stories or fatten my resume if I want to start a home business.  The last example would allow me to be there more for my daughter at home and complete other personal writings that I want to do.  The possibilities are endless with the gift of writing.  Once I adjusted to being an older student and honed up on study habits, I looked around in disbelief. I learned a wonderful secret about college: IT IS A PLETHORA OF INSPIRATION FOR A WRITER!  More...
